Rev. Sam Childers is the founder and leader of the Children’s Village in Southern Sudan. Years after Sam turned his life around, he was exposed to the atrocities towards children in the region. After running a successful construction company for several years, Sam gave up his business to dedicate himself to the full time rescue and rehabilitation of children. Sam’s amazing life story is immortalized on the silver screen with Gerard Butler portraying Sam in the movie Machine Gun Preacher (2011). Sam uses his experience as a springboard to discuss the importance of humanitarian efforts, urging audiences to find their own cause to make a positive impact in the world.
Sam Childers has been rescuing and restoring war affected children in northern Uganda and Southern Sudan for nearly 12 years. His organization has the largest orphanage in Southern Sudan and is unique in its approach of leading armed rescue missions directly into LRA (Lords Resistance Army) territory.
Thousands of children of have become orphans as a result of brutal LRA attacks on remote villages in Southern Sudan and Northern Uganda. Most of the war-affected children cannot rescue themselves and will die of starvation or bodily wounds inflicted by the LRA.
Over 30,000 children have been abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in the region. Some relief organizations report as many as 50,000 children have been abducted and 1.7 million people have been displaced. The abducted children are generally forced to be child soldiers or sex slaves until they escape or are rescued.
The Children’s Village currently houses and educates over 200 orphans, with over a thousand children rescued since its inception. The number of additional children rescued is directly proportionate to our ability to raise funds. There are many orphans who are in need of rescue as a result of recent LRA attacks.
Our aim is for these children to become healthy, independent adults through complete rehabilitation, education, and teaching of a trade. Letting them be children again has proven to be one of the most healing elements of the rehabilitation process.
The Sudanese staff at the Children’s Village primarily is orphans and widows themselves. We’ve found that no one understands the needs of our children better than those who have shared their experiences.
It is important to note that Machine Gun Preacher also takes food, clothing and medical assistance to the recently attacked villages where we perform rescues. We also feed over 1,200 meals a day from our compound. Please go to www.angelsofeastafrica.org and email or call our office.
