Biography

A superstar whose popularity transcends boxing, Oscar De La Hoya is known around the world not only as one of the best fighters of his era, but as an elite promoter, Grammy-nominated singer, astute businessman and active philanthropist. De La Hoya has been recognized by lawmakers in Washington, DC, California and Los Angeles for his many contributions to the Mexican American community.

Over the course of his boxing career, Oscar was an Olympic gold medalist, 10-time world champion in six divisions and among the biggest draws in the history of the sport. Since retiring from the ring in 2009, Oscar has focused his attention on building the company he founded, Golden Boy Promotions, into one of the most successful boxing promotion companies in the world.

De La Hoya’s road began on the tough streets of East Los Angeles, California. He once said, “I was a kid who was bullied. My dad took me to the gym, and the rest is history.” Oscar started boxing at the age of six and had 228 amateur fights (223-5) before turning professional, amassing a professional record of 39-6 and earning a reputation as a fighter who would take on any opponent.

In 1995, De La Hoya started his namesake Foundation to help improve the quality of life for those living in disadvantaged communities. The Oscar De La Hoya Foundation supports the Oscar De La Hoya Animo Charter High School, the Cecilia Gonzalez De La Hoya Cancer Center and the Oscar De La Hoya Labor and Delivery Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (both located at White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles) as well as numerous after-school programs that help guide young people toward leading positive lives and away from the circumstances of gang violence, juvenile delinquency, and substance abuse.

A supporter of public schools, De La Hoya partnered with Green Dot Public Schools and founded the Oscar De La Hoya Charter Animo High School in 2003. Oscar donated $4.5 million dollars donation to support the school construction. The school was the first high school to open in Boyle Heights in more than 75 years.

In 2008, De La Hoya received a larger-than- life-size bronze statue outside of the Staples Center in Los Angeles. His statue stands next to the legendary icons Lakers star Earvin “Magic” Johnson and the LA Kings’ Wayne Gretzky.

Elected to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2014, Oscar was also named Promoter of the Year by Sports Illustrated and Boxing Man of the Year by Yahoo! Sports the same year in recognition of his significant contributions to the sport of boxing.

Following a stellar year for his company Golden Boy Promotions in 2015, De La Hoya was once again named Promoter of the Year by Sports Illustrated.

Today, De La Hoya continues to lead Golden Boy Promotions as chairman and CEO with a focus on building the sport’s next generation of talented superstars including Canelo Alvarez, Jorge Linares, Lucas Matthysse, and David Lemieux.
