David Wells
David "Boomer" Wells rollicking life has been a roller coaster ride, filled with good times, great stories and on-field accomplishments matched by few in the game of baseball. He is a 3-Time All Star, with the Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays; he became the 15th pitcher in Major League History to pitch a perfect game; and he's a 2-time World Series Champion with the Toronto Blue Jays (1992) and New York Yankees (1998). His on-field accomplishments are a testament to his competitive zeal and to his never say die attitude.
More than a World Champion and All-Star, David has been one of the great outsized personalities in the game: he rides Harley's to the stadium, blasts heavy metal before pitching, dons caps worn by his idol, Babe Ruth, and has hosted Saturday Night Live
His autobiography Perfect I'm Not: Boomer on Beer, Brawls, Backaches and Baseball, was published in 2003. Of the book, Publishers Weekly wrote, "Wells's rollicking memoir of his unlikely journey to the top of the hill at Yankee Stadium reads like Bull Durham rewritten by Ozzy Osbourne and Howard Stern."
David's Mom died of Diabetes and he has, through the David Wells Foundation and Celebrity Softball games, raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to combat the disease.
David Wells learned this year that he has Type 2 diabetes, but he vows to beat the disease and he has already drastically changed his lifestyle in order to do so. When Wells, 43, learned of the diagnosis he told the San Diego Tribune, "Obviously, this is a concern. But it's beatable. And I'm going to beat it. It's going to take some lifestyle changes. And I'm already making them."
David brings to the podium the same personality he brought to the field. His speeches are filled with anecdotes from his colorful career, insights into what it takes to compete with passion, and just seriously funny stories.
