After a two year stint as the Diamondbacks bench coach in 2001 and 2002, which included a 2001 World Series victory, Bob Melvin was hired as the Manager of the Seattle Mariners. In his first year in Seattle he set a first-year Mariners record by guiding his team to 93 victories. After two seasons in Seattle, the former Major League catcher was once again hired by the Diamondbacks. His tenure as Manager with the Arizona team began in 2005, where he led the team to a 26-game turnaround from the previous year, finishing 2nd in the division only five games behind the West-winning San Diego Padres. Melvin continued this success in the 2006 season, finishing the year with 41 wins in intra-division play, the best record in the West Division. In his personal time, Bob and his family are very active with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

- Finished 90-72 in 2007 - The best record in the National League.
- The 2007 Diamondbacks won the NL West divisional title and swept the Chicago Cubs in the 2007 NLDS
- Bob Melvin has also been named The Sporting News National League Manager of the Year. The award was voted on by MLB players and managers.
